Douglas County-based Dish Network has been studying whether to offer Dish-branded home security, conducting focus groups to gauge consumer interest in purchasing such services from a pay-TV provider.

Comcast, the nation’s largest cable-TV company and Dish’s chief competitor in Colorado, launched broadband-based home security in Denver last year.

During a focus group session held in the metro area last month, attendees were shown the video above, which covers interactive home security solutions, and subsequently asked whether they would buy the service from Dish.

The satellite-TV provider would resell the service, generically branded as in the video, through a third-party company called Vivint. One possible name would be Dish Home Security Powered by Vivint.

Companies often hire research companies to conduct focus group meetings on potential offerings that never reach the mass market. I have reached out to a Dish Network spokesman for comment and will update this post when he responds.

Analysts have said Comcast’s move into home security is largely focused on locking consumers into an additional service, making them less likely to jump ship after the promotional pricing period expires on their broadband and pay-TV services.

“The cable operators don’t see this as an enormous opportunity but something that might be able to tack on a little bit of incremental revenue and get consumers’ roots a little deeper within their service,” SNL Kagan analyst Ian Olgeirson told me last year.

Stand-alone home security provider ADT, which has about 6 million customers nationwide, has been aggressively offering a $49 installation special in the face of increased competition.

Dish mobile broadband

Along the lines of service bundles, Dish is also considering jumping into the mobile broadband business, making an unsolicited offer this month to acquire high-speed network operator Clearwire for just more than $5 billion.

Dish said in a filing posted Tuesday by the Federal Communications Commission that it is in ongoing negotiations with a special committee of Clearwire’s board of directors.
